KURSAAL OOSTENDE
HERITAGE VENUE

Protected heritage since 1998

Since 1998, the Kursaal Ostend has been officially protected as heritage. This recognition not only underlines the architectural value of the building, but also the way in which art, design, and its unique location by the sea come together. The Kursaal is thus a tangible witness to modernist thinking and a lasting cultural beacon on the Belgian coast.

A living heritage by the sea

Kursaal Oostende is more than just a building. It is a place where art, architecture, and experience have come together for decades, with the sea as a permanent backdrop. As an iconic landmark on the Belgian coast, the Kursaal bears the prestigious Flanders Heritage Venue label, a recognition for locations where heritage and contemporary use go hand in hand.

Since 2019, Kursaal Oostende has been part of this exclusive network of 32 Flemish heritage sites. It confirms what visitors have long felt: this is heritage that lives on.

Architecture in dialogue with the sea

The current Kursaal was designed in the 1950s by modernist architect Léon Stynen. His design focused on the relationship with the sea. This is reflected in the large windows with panoramic sea views and the way in which light, space, and surroundings are deliberately connected.

This maritime inspiration runs like a thread through the building. The works of art in the Kursaal also refer to the sea—in theme, form, or material—thus reinforcing the connection between architecture, art, and landscape.

Protected details, timeless appearance

Inside, the Kursaal houses a series of protected heritage elements that define the character of the building. The iconic carpet patterns, now recognized as valuable interior heritage, and the warm wooden paneling give the rooms their recognizable, timeless appearance. Every detail has been carefully designed and contributes to the unique atmosphere of the building.

The lounge was also renovated, with a focus on light and space. Thanks to the large windows, this multifunctional space enjoys an expansive view of the sea and can be used flexibly for a variety of occasions within the building.

Heritage with many functions

With more than 4,300 m² of meeting and event space, a concert hall with 2,000 seats, multifunctional rooms with sea views, and a fully equipped meeting center, the Kursaal combines impressive scale with refined details. The monumental foyer offers a phenomenal view of the sea, beach, and dike.

Kursaal Ostend shows that heritage is not a static concept, but a living framework in which art, encounters, and experiences continue to reinforce each other.
