Interview with Metejoor: “You have to stay true to yourself”

We spoke with Metejoor, one of the most beloved artists in Flanders, about his musical journey, the balance between his public and private life, and his upcoming performance at the pop-up venue Casino Foyer in the heart of Kursaal Oostende.

You’ve already achieved a lot of success in the Belgian music scene. How would you describe your musical journey so far?

I think my musical journey so far can be seen as a line that climbs steadily upward. It continued to rise steadily until 2021, when “1 in a Million” was released. From that point on, I’d draw that line suddenly shooting upward, only to continue rising at the same pace as before. Ultimately, it forms one beautiful, clear line.

What was the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome during your musical career?
The biggest musical challenge was finding my own identity as Metejoor—my own sound. I really wanted to create a sound that would be picked up by various radio stations, because that’s still essential for building a sustainable career.

Your music often has an emotional and personal depth. Where do you get your inspiration for the lyrics, and how do you ensure they remain authentic?
My inspiration comes mainly from everyday life, but also from collaborating with Sasha and Stefan, The Companions. Usually, before our writing sessions, we have a conversation about what we’ve experienced or felt recently. That actually lays the groundwork for a song right away.

If we don’t have any specific ideas or feelings, Sasha and Stefan usually have a melody ready, and we work together to find a good topic. So we often draw from our own experiences and feelings. We rarely have to force ourselves to come up with a topic. The most important thing is to stay true to yourself and express your feelings, experiences, and personal insights in a way that everyone can relate to.

As an artist who shares his music with thousands of people, how do you deal with the pressure of public life and maintaining your personal space?
I didn’t handle that very well in the past. People often see you as public property, which means everyone thinks they can say anything to you or that they deserve your time. Even if it’s just for five or ten minutes. If everyone thinks that way, there’s little time left for yourself.

I used to be too open about personal matters. I’ve learned from that, and now I have a better sense of what I should keep to myself. Just because you’re famous doesn’t mean everyone has the right to know everything about you. That was a valuable lesson for me.

Your performance at the Casino Foyer is standing rather than seated. How do you feel about that?
I’m very positive about it. It’s just fun. A standing audience creates an atmosphere right from the first second where you can’t help but dance along, sing along, and jump along. That gives a totally different energy than with a seated audience.

During previous shows, we’ve noticed that a seated audience eventually stands up anyway, but even then the atmosphere remains slightly different. That’s why I’m really looking forward to this.

What can your fans expect in the future? Are there any new projects or collaborations in the works that you can share a bit about?
Yes, Metejoor wouldn’t be Metejoor without new collaborations. We have both very unexpected and logical collaborations planned. Some of them will definitely surprise fans.

In addition to these collaborations, new solo material is also on the way, as we’re currently working on a new album that will likely be released around October. This third album will feature an innovative style and production, yet will still be recognizably Metejoor.

Will we see you again in the new hall of Kursaal Oostende for a standing concert with over 3,000 people?
Absolutely! Kursaal Oostende remains a magical place with a rich history, and the renovated venue offers every opportunity to make history again. I truly hope to be part of that.
